Inside: Craft Stick Raft Tutorial
This month we’re highlighting Caddie Woodlawn and the Caddie Woodlawn Book Guide.
Caddie Woodlawn is one of those excellent books with timeless themes. The story takes place over the course of a year in the life of a young pioneer girl. Throughout the story, Caddie has one adventure after another and one of those adventures involves a raft.
We thought it would be fun to focus a little on Caddie with a fun raft project…that just so happens to be included in the Caddie Woodlawn Book Guide (alongside some other really fun projects). This project will make reading Caddie Woodlawn memorable.
But the real value is how the story opens up so many opportunities for discussion. And we all know that those discussions can lead to character building because stories reach the heart in a powerful way.
Craft Stick Raft Tutorial
Gather Supplies
- 18 Jumbo Craft Sticks
- 1 Small Craft Stick
- Elmer’s School Glue or E6000 Waterproof Craft Glue
- 4″ x 4″ Piece of Construction Paper for Sail
Step 1: Make the Bottom of the Raft
- Place 8 jumbo craft sticks side by side.
- On opposite ends, glue two jumbo craft sticks in opposite direction.
- Let dry. Note: It’s a good idea to set something heavy like a book on top.
Step 2: Make the Top of the Raft
- Turn the raft over and glue another 8 jumbo craft sticks to the top of the raft.
- When placing the craft sticks across the top, be sure to leave a small opening in the center for the mast. Use the small craft stick as a guide.
- Let dry. Note: It’s a good idea to set something heavy like a book on top.
Step 3: Make the Mast & Sail
- While the raft glue is drying, make the mast.
- With heavy duty scissors, cut the curved end off of the small craft stick
- If desired, decorate the 4″ x 4″ sail
- Fold the 4″ x 4″ square corner to corner to create a triangle.
- Run a small bead of glue around on the inside edges of the sail and on both sides of the top of the small craft stick.
- Glue the sail to the mast. Let dry.
- Generously glue the mast into the center of the raft. Let dry completely.
- Set sail!
