Eleven-year-old Adam loved to travel throughout thirteenth century England with his father, a wandering minstrel, and his dog, Nick. When Nick is stolen and his father disappears, Adam suddenly finds himself alone.
We’ll call this one an oldie but a goodie. It won the 1943 Newbery Medal for Excellence in American Children’s Literature. The story follows an 11-year old minstrel named Adam as he travels around medieval England in search of his father and his faithful dog Nick (a stand-out character, in our opinion).
Along his journey, Adam meets a variety of people and offers you a tour of England from the countryside to grand ol’ London…or, rather, smelly and crowded London…in 1294. It’s quite the journey and full of heart. Your kids will be inspired by Adam’s determination to keep going despite many challenges along the way.

Don’t judge this book by its slightly uninspiring cover. The story is full of rich details about life in the Middle Ages. There are knights in shining armor, traveling minstrels, stone castles, and so much more. You’ll want to add this one to your read-aloud list!
