Amari and the Night Brothers
This chapter book has been a new favorite since we first read it in 2021. It immediately went onto our Family Summer Read-aloud List, and we’re eagerly awaiting Book 2 in the series set to release in late August, 2022. We’ve heard it described as Harry Potter meets Men in Black, and we couldn’t have said it better.
Amari is a 13-year old girl living in the projects and struggling in life since the disappearance of her older brother Quinton. A ticking briefcase delivers surprising news and launches Amari into a secret magical world and a quest to reunite her family.
The excitement of this hidden-world-within-our-world adventure kicks off in chapter one and keeps you turning the pages. You’ll root for Amari as she navigates the secrets of the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs and the mysteries surrounding her brother’s disappearance.
Author B. B. Alston has managed to create a world that somehow feels familiar yet entirely unique. We don’t know where he plans to take the series (and its content) in following installments, but for now we can heartily recommend Book 1 for young readers who enjoy fantasy/magical adventures and can handle some of the hard things that often happen in them.
Recommended Age: 10+
Set aside time because you’ll have a hard time putting this one down. It makes a great family read-aloud, or the audio version would be perfect for a road trip.
